Training explosive power with bands
Explosive power is important for many sports, and is also considered vital in old age.
With conventional weights, we run into problems:
- Force at the start of the movement is unlimited, "infinite acceleration =
infinite force".
- In the midrange, your force expression is limited due to the speed of the weight.
- Towards the top of the movement, you may have to actively slow down the weight
to avoid crashing into the limits of your joint range of motion.
With bands, explosive training becomes more practical:
- There is negligible momentum, just the weight of the moving limb and the band.
- The force at the bottom is limited to the band resistance and the force needed
to accelerate your limb.
- You can push or pull all out.
- If the band is heavy enough, it will stop your movement before you hit the limits
of your joint.
- The eccentric movement should be done under control.
